Frequently asked questions
General
I work with many different presenting concerns; I specialize in working with adults who experience childhood trauma and relationship issues in Ottawa. I predominantly take an attachment lens to understand unhealthy patterns in relationships, often stemming from childhood experiences, and focus on reshaping these patterns into healthier ones.
Starting therapy can feel intimidating — that’s completely normal. Nerves will probably be higher in the first session because we are technically strangers! Because of this, the first session is all about information gathering and getting you comfortable. We will first look at the consent form to confirm details then I will ask you questions to get to know you and your story.
I may ask some questions about:
Your current challenges and symptoms
Your personal history (relationships, work, family, etc.)
Any past therapy experiences
Your goals for therapy
Keep in mind, therapy moves at your pace and you get to share with me the information you want.
That’s completely okay — many of my clients are starting therapy for the first time.
You don’t need to know how therapy “works,” what to say, or how to prepare. There’s no script to follow and no right or wrong way to show up. My role is to guide the process and help you feel comfortable.
You’re not expected to share everything all at once. Trust builds over time, and therapy is a collaborative process. You can always ask questions about what we’re doing and why.
Starting therapy for the first time is a big step — and often a brave one. You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin! It can simply starts with a "hey there" email.
Fees:
My session fee is discussed before we begin so there are no surprises. Sessions are typically 50 minutes long, and the rate of $150 covers the time we spend together as well as preparation, documentation, and coordination of care when needed.
Insurance:
I do not offer direct billing - however I am covered by most insurance companies. Please look into your own plan to ensure coverage.
Payments:
Payment is typically due at the time of service. I accept card, cash, or e-transfer. Receipts are populated at the time of payment.
If cost is a concern, please feel free to ask about sliding scale options or alternative resources. I’m happy to have an open conversation about what works for you.
Finding the right therapist is an important part of the process — and it’s okay to take that seriously.
I may be a good fit for you if you enjoy a good laugh, need someone to hold you accountable, and need that extra push to talk about the elephant in the room. My clients may describe me as a little more direct than others and a little less "flowery".
If at any point it doesn’t feel like the right fit, that’s okay too. I’m happy to help you find another provider who may better match your needs. My priority is that you receive the support that feels right for you.
